A significant savings was achieved, and I beat out another contractor who was going to put down 1/4" backerboard, didn't ask about the structure/deflection, and told the customer that expansion joints were not needed, I was awarded the job even though my price was higher by a thousand dollars. This was a second meeting with the customer, had measured and done the opening song and dance a week ago. (loose and installed on board with tile) I am able to offer Greenskin at a better price since I don't have to buy, transport, mix, or spread any thinset for it's installation. Customer was interested in Ditra, we did speak at length about the respective properties of each, and had physical samples of both with me. Customers/installers love it because it's cheaper to ship, store, and easier to haul to the site. Architects love it, as it lightens the floor load, while adding strength and killer crack suppression (up to 1/2 inch) in the process. We sort of compare the design change to what we've seen with athletic shoes, mattresses, etc.products that have become lighter AND stronger, with improved designs over the years. Devcom "flips" (inverts) the design, using 30+mils of reinforced membrane (much less dense), and it, in return, adds strength, without adding "dead glue weight" to the overall product. This dense asphalt dramatically weighs down the product, and adds very little physical strength, in exchange for the % of weight it contributes to the overall product's weight. Most designs are broken down as follows: approx 30-35 mils of glue - asphalt based adhesives (filled with nasty VOC's Solvents), around 5-7 mils of a nonwoven or a plastic membrane (facer sheet that carries the glue), and 3-5 mils of liner. overall thickness This 40 mils is made up of glue (asphalt), a membrane to carry the glue, and a release liner (paper or film). Most of the peel and stick products our there are around 40 mils thick - total.
